You may be happy to then know that , a Montreal-based campaign for safe cosmetics, launched last summer. Its goal: to inform Canadian girls and young women about the chemicals found in cosmetic ingredients.

FemmeToxic is hosted by , a cancer prevention organization. The also partners the project, and operates to promote girls “to speak out, build skills, and create action on issues that are important and real to them.”

“Youth specifically are more susceptible to toxins in the environment, at that stage in development, so they decided to launch this project,” Angela Day said, the safe cosmetics campaign assistant.

Day holds workshops for schools and community groups in order to spread awareness. She puts on an interactive workshop where she discuses the effects that toxins found in cosmetics have on youth and what they can do about it.

Another purely hands-on workshop she gives is meant to “move away from the toxic messages and products of the beauty industry.” Last Valentine’s Day she held the first of its kind, making do-it yourself facials and bath salts with attendees.

When asked why Canada hasn’t developed a similarly strong movement for safe cosmetics, in comparison to the United States, Day’s answer was two-fold.

The situation in the United States is more urgent because the country has fewer regulations on cosmetics than Canada, she explained.

Day also said that Breast Cancer Action Montreal is one of “few organizations that are working on cancer prevention in Canada and not for the cure. And so coming from that perspective there are just very few people working on it, and to address the issue it needs to come from that framework.”

The FemmeToxic project has recently started a postcard campaign directed at the . It also plans on going national in the next year by loading media art displays and other resources onto its website.

I’m 23-years-old and I’ve formerly used anti-aging products on a regular basis. It’s silly, I know. Well, at least I hope you find it silly, because it can be downright depressing to continually run into people who also share in our culture’s suffocating fear of aging.

Ah, to be young and beautiful seems so essential for female happiness and success at times. Moving past the psychically damaging effects caused by over praising youthful beauty, a recent report in the revealed the presence of in creams claiming to rejuvenate or enhance the youthful appearance of skin.

The products did not include estrogen on the ingredients label, and unfortunately the report also did not release the names of the creams tested.

“Daily application of topical ‘youth enhancing’ moisturizers containing estrogen or estrogenically active compounds could theoretically be a risk to women with breast cancer,” stated the report.

It also noted the case of a 93-year-old woman who developed “invasive breast cancer” and “a hyperplastic uterus as large as an adult menstruating female.” The authors believe the woman’s extended use of a cream containing estradiol was connected to both conditions.

Dr. Lorne Brandes, a senior oncologist at CancerCare Manitoba, analyzed the report’s findings on CTV’s

“six — almost 40 per cent — of the creams [tested] contained significant amounts (up to 0.61%) of estriol or estrone, two potent forms of estrogen. As a comparator, Estrase, a vaginal cream prescribed to treat symptoms of vaginal dryness in post-menopausal women, contains up to 60 times less estrogen!”

download divx tron movie

“How can this be?” I asked myself. I discovered that neither nor the test cosmetics before they hit the market. They instead rely mainly on an honour system where manufacturers need only notify them of the ingredients used in their products.

Some anti-aging products are tested if they’re classified as drugs for making certain therapeutic claims. You’ll know if one falls into this category because they’re issued a ; an 8-digit number displayed somewhere on the packaging or product following the acronym DIN.

The report’s findings clearly provide me with an impetus to understand more about how the cosmetic industry operates. My friend, who used to work for Health Canada, said there likely aren’t enough resources available to examine each and every product before it goes for sale. But, is this reasonable? If hormones are showing up unannounced in popular skin care products, a better regulatory process needs to be implemented.

What’s in your make-up kit? And how many of those beauty products do you use in a day? Give or take a few products, my usual morning regime involves body lotion, tinted moisturizer, mascara, hair mold, and sometimes bronzer or eyeliner if I’m feeling so inclined. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of other women, particularly young women, also reach my daily average.

What concerns me is that most beauty products contain parabens, a type of preservative used to extend the shelf life of cosmetics and prevent them from developing mold. But, what concerns me more are recent studies suggesting parabens may pose human health risks.

There are a variety of personal care products being sold as paraben-free, and ones consisting of only natural preservatives claimed to be safe alternatives to those used in traditional cosmetic brands.

However, so-called natural preservatives, such as grapefruit seed extract and honeysuckle extract, have also been called out for having potentially damaging health effects — meaning just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s not harmful.

Without a science background to make sense of parabens and to evaluate the validity and potential seriousness of information on them, I tried to chase down experts in the relevant fields who could help me out. Unfortunately, all my leads up to this point have come up dry. I’ll keep trying.

I did find a series of blog posts on The Huffington Post written by Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, a professor emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. He’s also an author of Toxic Beauty, a book that analyzes the ingredients used in prevalent cosmetic and personal care products for their toxic effects.

In a blog post, Dr. Epstein states that “it has been estimated that women are exposed to high levels, as much as 50 milligrams of parabens daily, from cosmetics and personal care products.”

This exposure is noteworthy as he explains:

“Parabens have shown to be readily absorbed through the skin of immature female rodents, and to stimulate premature uterine growth. Parabens have also been shown to stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells in laboratory tests, and incriminated as possible causes of breast cancer.”

Dr. Epstein’s conclusions are somewhat frightening when I consider how many products containing parabens I use a day. We’re all in charge of looking after our own health, and the next time I buy something that will be applied to my skin I’m going to pay more attention to what’s on the label.

Sarah Dickson, the body care buyer at Capers Whole Foods Market in Kitsilano, puts it to me simply, “I’d like to be able to eat all my make-up if I had to.” Our bodies absorb most of what we put on our skin, and we can’t always break down that material she explains. If it’s not safe to eat, don’t put it on you is the idea.

The problem is many people don’t understand the meaning of the often hard to pronounce substances found on long ingredients lists, let alone their potentially harmful effects. Health Canada provides a public hotlist of those ingredients restricted from use in cosmetics, which does not include the aforementioned offenders – parabens and aluminum – but does allow minimum levels of formaldehyde in particular products. This is ostensibly because Health Canada does not believe they pose a significant health risk, despite outcries against their widespread use.

Parabens are a class of preservatives used to maximize a product’s longevity. They’re accused of causing hormonal disruption and increasing one’s risk of cancer. Check the label on your sunscreen or hand lotion to see if any ingredients end with –paraben. I’m guessing something likely does, or quite possibly, the chemical name is cleverly hidden by a natural sounding stand-in.

Aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly is another popular additive in anti-perspirant, and is linked to both reproductive and neurotoxicity. The bane of my past summer was trying to find a deodorant that didn’t contain this ingredient, and could at least stop me from smelling, if not sweating. My search failed, completely.

Formaldehyde, used in nail hardeners, is a chemical also associated with causing cancer and birth defects. It’s not permitted in aerosol cosmetics, probably due to evidence deeming it a respiratory toxicant. So, when you paint your nails, maybe try not to breathe in too deeply.

Some are quick to call this alarm bunk, saying simply standing outside and breathing polluted air is more harmful to human health than the personal care products we use on a daily basis. But, stay tuned! In the next few weeks, I plan on navigating through body care narratives to find out what truly matters when it comes to our health.
