You may be happy to then know that , a Montreal-based campaign for safe cosmetics, launched last summer. Its goal: to inform Canadian girls and young women about the chemicals found in cosmetic ingredients.

FemmeToxic is hosted by , a cancer prevention organization. The also partners the project, and operates to promote girls “to speak out, build skills, and create action on issues that are important and real to them.”

“Youth specifically are more susceptible to toxins in the environment, at that stage in development, so they decided to launch this project,” Angela Day said, the safe cosmetics campaign assistant.

Day holds workshops for schools and community groups in order to spread awareness. She puts on an interactive workshop where she discuses the effects that toxins found in cosmetics have on youth and what they can do about it.

Another purely hands-on workshop she gives is meant to “move away from the toxic messages and products of the beauty industry.” Last Valentine’s Day she held the first of its kind, making do-it yourself facials and bath salts with attendees.

When asked why Canada hasn’t developed a similarly strong movement for safe cosmetics, in comparison to the United States, Day’s answer was two-fold.

The situation in the United States is more urgent because the country has fewer regulations on cosmetics than Canada, she explained.

Day also said that Breast Cancer Action Montreal is one of “few organizations that are working on cancer prevention in Canada and not for the cure. And so coming from that perspective there are just very few people working on it, and to address the issue it needs to come from that framework.”

The FemmeToxic project has recently started a postcard campaign directed at the . It also plans on going national in the next year by loading media art displays and other resources onto its website.

It’s official, you no longer need to leave the comfort of your own home to enjoy one on one yoga instruction. The technology: virtual yoga offered via your webcam.

India based is the first site to offer the services. For the cost of just $20 you can experience live one on one yoga instruction with a certified yoga teacher 24/7. All you need to do is register online and choose the time you want. Once you’re registered in the class you’re sent a link to begin your quest for serenity.

This new ability to take a class online could really be a God send for the time strapped student.(Expect if you’re a Mac using student, the site is still working on it’s Mac platform). Sometimes you just can’t make the time constraints of the studio.

buy alpha and omega the movie

Studio replaced?

The new technology falls somewhere between streaming online classes (like Vancouver based ) and actual face to face interaction with an instructor. Although the ability to receive real time instruction without having to venture out may appear to be absolutely brilliant, some critics argue it’s missing an important element of the yoga experience, human connection.

‘It’s really hard to duplicate that one on one connection,” said , Founder of Semperviva Yoga and the Director of Semperviva Yoga Teacher Training in Vancouver.

To Latham there’s a human element that can get lost in the online world. Latham argues that in today’s day and age, coming to a yoga class is sometimes the only human contact people get.

For Latham the sense of community found in the classroom is part of the yoga experience. She also believes that the small interactions made with other people in a group setting can be life training.

“It’s really easy to be peaceful on your own, but can you be peaceful when you’re with other people?” she asked.

But Latham admitted that the online platform does hold value. She sees it as most useful for the constant traveler or someone who really can’t make it to class. The webcam interaction does allow the teacher to give verbal cues to make the proper adjustments, they just can’t make the physical correction.

However for her, nothing will ever replace real human interaction. “I really enjoy working with a group… there’s just a lot to be learned in community.”

Namaste

University students are experts at abusing their bodies. They work hard, drink hard, play hard, and run off coffee after pulling repeated all nighters. They tend to get away with it because usually they’re relatively young and healthy. However every body needs some TLC. That’s where yoga comes in.

“We all know that students are quite overworked when it comes to living on the edge,” said i, a yoga instructor, Co-founder of Yoga for the People and a Research Psychologist at UBC, “it’s a lot of work on the body, a lot of stress on the body.” But according to Slocum- Gori, the mind-body connection of yoga can help to reverse some of these effects.

“Yoga itself on the mat triggers the parasynthetic nervous system which is the nervous system that is responsible for restoring, so it restores [the body] at the cellular level,” she said.

Not only does it restore, but the mind body connection created in yoga improves overall focus off the mat.

“The goal of yoga is to utilize the mat as a training ground for the mind and body,” said Slocum-Gori. She said that once the mind has been trained to focus, the benefits will be apparent in every day life, including studies.

The list goes on

watch the other guys online

Yoga’s positive impact on the student body doesn’t end there. There is a l that regular practice will create. Some relevant to the hardworking student include increase in learning efficiency, energy levels and memory.

A healthy focused mind is a beautiful (and beneficial) thing.

It’s not just university students who are going to benefit from yoga. Some elementary schools are realizing the healthy impact of yoga on their students.

A school in and one in have adopted the downward dog. In, there’s also a studio just for kids. Each school emphasizes the importance of stress release, regular psychical activity and just teaching kids to chill out as their reasons for implementing the practice.

If an eight-year-old student can learn yoga to chill out, then I don’t see why a 19-year-old or 25-year-old student can’t do the same.

If you’ve managed to find a meaningful relationship, you’ve probably realized that looks aren’t everything.

That sentiment holds true on , a Vancouver-based online dating service that The New York Times

[/caption]

How has a website that plays matchmaker become number one without being visually appealing?

When I joined, I was told that I’d increase my chance at love by 230% if I uploaded a photo. Judging by this note, it’s likely that creator Markus Frind understands the importance of visuals.

This was what I saw when I didn't upload a photo. Oopsies.

Aesthetics play an important role for businesses. In particular, Apple’s for its sleek designs that keep people shelling out cash for its iProducts.

Even websites fight over who’s the prettiest. At the Internet’s version of the Oscars – – Plenty Of Fish has yet to receive accolades. (To be fair, it didn’t make the either.)

Plenty of Fish was the only dating website on the Top 20 sites visited last week.

Yet, week after week, millions of people visit the website. Last week, it was the 20th most visited site in Canada. Frind’s blog says that although the is shrinking, Plenty Of Fish continues to .

The website works because it gives people what they want, for free. (This is , yet seemingly effective.)

When you have to pay to join a dating website, such as competitors eHarmony.com or Match.com, you might feel as though you’re paying for love. Many daters are willing to look at ugly ads or unformatted photos to avoid this sentiment. It has been that people care more about content than context. is another website where less has proven to be more.

Perhaps I should apply this concept to dating.

Plenty Of Fish is also an advertising goldmine. It collects masses of personal information to help people find their closest matches. Frind his advertising model to Facebook’s, where ads are targeted based on intimate details.

If Frind’s profits are an indicator, the online advertising business model is far from dead. This Vancouverite earns about annually.

I bet he has no trouble getting a date.

Canada’s e-business industry attracts big money, according to Statistics Canada. Entrepreneurs, small businesses and large corporations alike all want their piece of the multi-billion dollar pie.

Professor teaches MBA students about e-business at UBC’s Sauder School of Business. He sat down with me to discuss the major pitfalls associated with online business endeavors.

In order, here is Cenfetelli’s list of the top three blunders companies make when trying to put the ‘e’ before business.

1. Bad business strategy

“e-business isn’t magic – just because you put it online doesn’t mean it’s going to be successful,” said Cenfetelli.

Many companies lack a basic business strategy, according to Cenfetelli. “You need to know what your business is about, who your market is, what you’re going to sell and to whom,” he said.

2. Design flaws

Professor Ron Cenfetelli

“In a split second, people make an evaluation of your site,” said Cenfetelli.

Just like job interviews, count. Cenfetelli says your website is the face you show the world – people won’t hesitate to judge it.

He added that professional websites that “behave well” might cost tens of thousands of dollars to develop.

What if a small business can’t afford website development?

Cenfetelli recommends they use a third party platform, such as or . These sites offer a home on the Internet, storage and transaction capabilities.

“Someone else has already figured out infrastructure for you so you don’t have to focus on that,” he said. “Focus on what your core business is about.”

3. Security

the social network movies

Consumers across the board are concerned with online security, according to Ipsos Reid.

“It’s a constant arms race where you have to come up with more security to protect your platform,” said Cenfetelli.

For as long as there has been sensitive information, there have been hackers who want it. Cenfetelli says the battle between developers and hackers has become worse over time.

“Hackers are constantly finding ways of leveraging online platforms for their own gains,” he said. “Now you need that distinguish human beings from automated bots that want to spam.”

Are you a human? If so, you should be able to read this captcha. If you can't, you're probably a computer.

Customers now demand basic security for commercial transactions, supplied by companies such as VeriSign. This keeps consumers’ credit card numbers, addresses and personal details safe.

However, security isn’t cheap. Cenfetelli estimated that small businesses spend a few hundred dollars each month for a basic security packages.

Breaking the rules

As always, there are exceptions to the rules. Cenfetelli mentioned and , both notorious for committing all three of these “mistakes.”

“It seems like they’re creating money out of thin air,” said Cenfetelli.

Every female hockey fan battles with . Girls are not always taken for loyal fans of the game. Instead they’re seen as groupies waiting for what goes on after the game.

“They’re groupies,” said Matt Krause, who referees recreational games and used to play hockey in the minor leagues. “They congregate around the rink chasing after hockey players.”

Some women are hardcore hockey fans. They’re at the game to cheer and watch hockey. Some are there to watch the hockey players and maybe hook-up with one if they are lucky enough, said Krause.

Souvenir shirts for women come in pink, baby blue, purple, with sparkles and in many different cuts to fit the female form.

“Growing up in a big, old hockey town, there were lots of girls around the rink,” said Jessica Rogers. She grew into the game watching the Collingwood Blues, a minor league team in Ontario.

“I associate with the chicks who just come to the game to watch the guys. They were there to wait after the game, really dressed up, hair straightened, makeup on, high heels on, ready to go.”

Being or a hockey honey is degrading and implies girls who go to hockey games are only there to sleep with the players, said Rogers.

“They’re in it for the idea a guy might be going to the, so she better sleep with him now and get him. It’s stupid and it gives other girls a ,” said Rogers. She thinks this type of girl exists primarily in the minor leagues.

NHL marketers think pink will attract female fans instead of making smaller sizes of men's jerseys for women.

“It’s pretty sad too,” continued Rogers. “Girls that think they need to act like that to get attention.”

Rogers doesn’t deny some hockey players are good looking. They’re professional athletes and athletes are in shape.

Girls admiring a male athlete’s body are no different from guys complementing tennis player Anna Kournikova’s physique, said Rogers.

But muscles aside, female fans are challenging men for the title of ultimate fan.

They know the statistics: the highest scorer, save percentages, wins, loses, shutouts and penalty minutes. They easily could dual it out with the boys, said Krause.

But for Rogers, and the slew of female hockey fans , it’s long past time the bunny is thrown into the pot.

If it’s not, Rogers will still be watching the game.

“I don’t care what people think, as long as we win.”

Voices from the television can be heard from the doorway. watching the Canucks game from GM Place can be heard cheering in the background, as fans at the pub watch from booths with beers and burgers.

A group of guys laugh, sipping their Molson’s. They’re sitting in front of the big screen, finishing off a plate of ketchup; there may be some fries underneath.

Janice Wong, carrying a burger and coke, joins the booth. She is the only girl watching the game.

She is out numbered four to one, but she doesn’t care.

She may be out numbered at the table, but Janice Wong won't be out-manned during the game.

“It’s just me and the guys. I don’t really have a lot f friends that like hockey as much as I do,” said Wong, as the guys joked she didn’t have many friends at all. Taunting, name-calling and your-mom jokes are always in full use when hanging out with the boys.

Wong’s situation is not unusual for girls who love hockey. For , they’re often a minority whether it’s at the pub or on the couch.

“My girlfriends aren’t really hockey fans,” said Wong. “The guys let me tag along.”

Wong isn’t the odd one out just because she is a girl either. She is a Detroit Red Wings fan. The boys are loyal Canucks fans.

“The Canucks aren’t my number one. I’m a Wings fan. They’ve been good for a really long time. They don’t just get lucky,” said Wong.

The boys may disagree on her choice of team, but they think more would be great.

“I don’t think there is much difference between girl and guy fans. I just think girls are less common,” said Tom Siedlaziek.

Girls may drink a cosmopolitan instead of a beer during the game, but Siedlaziek said that’s alright with him

“I’ve never heard a girlfriend say, ‘hey, let’s go to the pub and watch the hockey game’,” said Rai Khan, but if a girl did offer to go watch the big game, he wouldn’t object.

“I’d give her a high five and be like, ‘go out with me Friday night’.”

From the other side of the table Wong laughed.

“I guess I have a new pick up line.”

I have been involved in a few protests the past four or five years, and although there have been many discussions and fights over, say, , there has been, from the perspective of this music geek, a definitive lack of discussion on the music at these events. Unfortunately, aggressively egalitarian anarcho-politics do not lend themselves to a discerning music selection, which has been to our detriment. There is an assumption that because we are all there in a common cause, we are all there in common taste. This has left my capitalist-smashing spirit dampened a few too many times at the sight and sounds of sweaty, rhythmless and tone-deaf protesters unfortunately attempting to get their, and our, groove on.

At the same time, there has been a definite improvement in the sounds of North American lefty protest over the past few generations, from the weak-willed, but earnest, harmony driven folk of the 1960s. As Bob Dylan proved rather early on, . So a reliance on the lungs and ululations of protesters cannot be positive, especially after so many throats were torn on the punk and riot grrrl songs driving the movement in the 1980s and 1990s.

Recently, I’ve noticed a great emphasis on the aforementioned rhythm, which seems to best capture the tense atmosphere at demos these days (at one of the first big protests during the 2010 Olympics, a choir kicked it old school with some folk harmonies, and it was a kind of lovely contrast to the helicopters shooting by overhead and the police puffed up like a hundred Michelin Men. But when it went back to rhythm, it just felt ‘more right’, and more confrontational, and during the protests these days of the something that lights a fire in the belly is only a good thing). So, when everyone’s in sync, it really works.

For instance, one of the best rhythm-heavy pieces I’ve seen recently was at the protest on Feb. 12. At some point after the activists had settled in front of GM Place, a small group of Aboriginal Canadians got together and pounded and sang a looping, slow melody. The non-Aboriginal in the crowd quieted down and we pushed ourselves back to allow the singers room to bang their drums. It brought in sharp focus the relatively recent effort to place anti-colonial struggle at the centre of the whole movement in this country. .

(I used to have a video of it too, which was accidentally damaged in, let’s say, a fire, rather than me accidentally formatting my SD card).

predicts that are going to form a new majority in various cities of Canada by 2031. Does that mean current members of visible minorities could truly evolve as a major part of this nation? Not just in numbers but in social, economical and political contexts? Having lived in Vancouver for the last 9 years as a member of visible minorities, I have met many immigrants and Korean-Canadians who suffer from identity crisis in process of settling down in Canada.

Let me introduce to some members of the visible minorities of the multicultural Metro Vancouver..

They feel like they used to be SOMEONE in their home countries but now they sank down to NO ONE in Canada.

1. Name: Jung-ryul Kim

Ethnic Background: Asian (Korean)

Occupation in Korea: History Education Professor at University of Dae-guu

Status in Canada: Canadian citizenship holder for 8 years

Occupation in Canada: Owner of a grocery store in North Vancouver

2. Name: Keum-min Cho

Ethnic Background: Asian (Korean)

Occupation in Korea: School Nurse

Status in Canada: Canadian citizenship holder for 2 years

Occupation in Canada: A kitchen helper at a sushi restaurant in Burnaby

3. Name: Xian (Kevin) Luk

Ethnic Background: Asian (Chinese)

Occupation in China: Lawyer

Status in Canada: Permanent Residency holder for 2 years

Occupation in Canada: Unemployed

The increase of population alone cannot allow visible minorities to become a new majority group. What needs to be done then? Many of my subjects think lack of adequate English skills is the biggest obstacle for them in their journey to break into Canada’s workforce. Then where can they go to get affordable language training and education? That should be my next task to find out if is ready to facilitate the new “emerging visible majorities”.

It is hard to walk by one block in Vancouver without spotting an Asian, Persian, Indian or any other kind of visible minorities.

This morning’s edition of had pictures of three visible minorities looking sharp and proud. The headline read, “as minority population booms, a visible majority emerges.” predicted by 2031, nearly 60 % of Vancouverites will belong to visible minority groups. The article acknowledged the difficulties and obstacles Canada would face in order to achieve harmony among various cultures and to truly blend together. However, as a Korean immigrant in Canada, I cannot help but wonder, “is it ever possible for visible minorities to play major roles in Canada?” (it is my impression that people from various immigrant groups already play enormous roles in the country? what evidence do you have to suggest otherwise?)

In the United States of America, Obama achieved a historical sensation by getting elected as the first African-American president of the nation. When he wowed our neighbouring country, many Canadian journalists questioned if it was likely for our nation to give birth to a visible minority Prime Minister. Many answered, “sure, maybe… in the future.”

Really? Can you imagine a Korean-born Prime Minister? Or a Chinese one? Could visible minorities truly emerge as major league players in Canada? Statistics Canada says by 2031 we (the visible minorities) will be the new emerging majorities but I would say it would take far longer than that to put various cultural aspects in one pot and melt them together without any explosions. I wonder what other members of visible minorities have to say about this and I better run outside and find out what they have to say.
