{"id":1011,"date":"2015-10-14T06:34:57","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T06:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thethunderbird.ca\/elxn42\/?p=1011"},"modified":"2016-08-08T08:08:01","modified_gmt":"2016-08-08T08:08:01","slug":"elxn42ontwitter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thethunderbird.ca\/elxn42\/elxn42ontwitter\/","title":{"rendered":"#elxn42 on Twitter"},"content":{"rendered":"<article class=\"entry-content\"><p>The 2015 federal election has seen a massive increase in social media activity from the previous federal election in 2011.\u00a0In 2012 the number of active Twitter users in Canada reached 3.3 million\u00a0with a projected increase of more than 100\u00a0per cent\u00a0to 6.8 million users for 2015, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/303875\/number-of-twitter-users-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\">Statista<\/a>. By 2018 it is estimated that there will be 8.5 million Twitter users in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>During the 42nd federal election campaign, the hashtag #elxn42 surpassed the popular #cdnpoli, a shorthand for Canadian politics, in frequency with approximately 943,000 tweets with #elxn42 and approximately 711,000 with #cdnpoli being tweeted between September 13 and October 12, 2015.
