Yui Mikuriya is what sociology defines as a Third

Yui Mikuriya is what sociology defines as a Third Culture Kid — a child who grows up in a culture different from that of their parents’ heritage.

She was born in Tokyo, brought up in a small town called Revel in South West France, and is now living in Vancouver pursuing her bachelor’s degree in business communications.

Inhabiting two worlds, with one foot in Japan and the other in France, Mikuriya wants to bridge the gap between the two cultures. She founded the Hokusai Ambassador Project to celebrate the commonalities between the two nations through art.

The iconic Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai housed in the Sumida Hokusai Museum is exceptionally popular in France, so much so that some of the most avid collectors of Hokusai’s works are French impressionists. Mikuriya decided to take this mutual interest in art among the Japanese and the French by making the Museum more accessible to French connoisseurs. She created videos and audios in French and English and also introduced booklets talking about the influence of Japanese aesthetics in French art and vice versa.

Howie Woiwod’s life changed when he found a pock

Howie Woiwod’s life changed when he found a pocket watch in a European antique shop.

“The guy in the shop opened up this pocket watch and showed me the movement. It just blew my mind,” said Woiwod, who was a musician in Montreal at the time. “I couldn't stop thinking about it. And then within the year, I was in school studying horology.”

After graduating from Canada’s only watchmaking school in 2016, he worked at Vancouver watch stores until pandemic forces inspired him to open his own shop, The Dialed In Watchmaker, last year.

“When I started to go into watch repair, people would be like, ‘Really? That's still a thing? And how big is the demand for that?’ But there's actually a lot of people who find the same romance behind a watch, something that is just springs and gears keeping a precise time. It's a science that's hundreds of years old, but it hasn't really changed much, you know? There's a lot of wonder in that.”
